The Nike ATS Cleatplate explores what a cleatplate might look like when environmental factors that are constraints for natural surface cleats are removed and allow for more design freedom which might enhance athlete performance.

Nike ATS Cleatplate

The Nike ATS (Artificial Turf Surface) Cleatplate is a response to the observation I had while coaching highschool varsity soccer. I noticed that even though most major sportswear brands make soccer cleats specifically designed for artificial surfaces, everyone still wears firm ground cleats. I believe this is due to the fact that turf cleats were originally designed for indoor soccer, and are not designed for the play style of the outdoor game. Additionally, there are certain environmental factors that exist while playing on natural surfaces that do not exist on artificial surfaces (mud, rocks, uneven playing fields, etc...). The absence of these factors, allow for a more technical cleat plate design that addresses the problems & opportunities presented in the outdoor artificial surface game

The Rise of Outdoor Artificial Turf Surfaces

A Unique Surface with Unique Problems
Talk about the research phase that went into the problem definition of the project and what the unique problems are coming out of it were. Who did you talk to and why did you choose those people.

Problem 01: Heat

Artificial Turf surfaces on tend to be X degrees hotter than natural surface on average. This creates and excess of sweat affecting sweat build up and heat swelling with the cleat. This negatively affects the perceived performance / confidence of the player.

Problem 02: Weight

Artificial surfaces offer a unique ability to design a cleatplate that does not have to consider environmental factors such as dirt, mud, and grass. This allows for a potential reduction in material as the cleatplate could become “permeable”, thus reducing material.

Problem 03: Support

Playing with stiff firm ground cleats on artificial surfaces has its benefits, namely energy return form the cleat plate. But because of the stiffness the impact on the body is increased resulting in X% more injuries on artificial surfaces at the highschool sport level.

Ideation Process: Slideshow

From inspiration to ideation to concept lock. This slideshow captures the majority of my ideation process.

Heat Resistance:

Ventilate through the cleateplate to reduce sweating and give the player a tighter fit.

Weight Reduction:

Reduce unnecessary material to lighten the cleateplate giving the player more fatigue resistance and a quicker first step
Flexibility & Rigitity:

Flex in the right areas to ground the player for firmer grip and agility on artificial surfaces

CAD Development

Talk about the CAD developemnt and creation of the last and how you built around that. The process of developing the cleatplate in Rhino and etc...
